As many as 1200 students from various educational institutions and schools of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chandigarh participated in the Bhai Surinder Singh Malik Memorial on-the-spot All-India Essay Writing Competition organized by the Jat Sabha, Chandigarh at Jat Bhawan, here, Ch. Bharat Singh Memorial Sports School, Nidani (Jind), Kanya Gurukul Khan Pur Kalan (Sonepat), M.D.N. Public School Rohtak, Viswas Senior Secondary School Hisar, S.D. High School Lakhan-Majra(Rohtak), Saraswati Senior Secondary School Murthal (Sonepat) and Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Julana (Jind).

of Police, Haryana presided over the cCompetition and Ms. Sarita Malik, HCS declared on the spot topic namely: “Illiteracy is a Curse” or “Foeticide Killing of a Girl Child Before Birth is a Crime Against Humanity”. Candidates were given choice to attempt the essay in Hindi or English. Prof. M. L. Dhawan, Sh. H. S. Bhadu, Director Haryana Olympic Association, Mr R. K. Malik, General Secretary, Mr B. S. Gill, Secretary, Mr J.S. Dhillon, Public Relation Secretary, Mr Manbir Singh Sangwan, Auditor of Jat Sabha, Chandigarh and other members of the Sabha were present on this Occasion. Mr. Dalip Singh, Director, Ch. Bharat Singh Memorial Sports School, Nidani (Jind) declared the topic at this centre. The competition was divided in two categories i.e. in rural amd urban Area.
According to Mr R. K. Malik, General Secretary Jat Sabha, Chandigarh the competition is organized every year as a permanent educational feature of the Sabha which vividly offers an opportunity to the young students of the schools and colleges/universities to play their significant rich and constructive role in promoting the creative interests for educational & cultural activities through their rich thoughts.
Mr. Malik further declared that the result of the essay contest would be declared later after checking of the papers by experts of Punjab University, Chandigarh. The winners will be honoured on the occasion of Basant Panchmi and 128th Birth Anniversary of Deen Bandhu Sir Chhotu Ram, leader of peasants and down-trodden on January 20, 2010 at Jat Bhawan Chandigarh.
The topper in both the categories will be awarded with gold medal and cash prize of Rs. 1100 whereas the second and third prize winners in each category will be awarded silver medal and cash. Rs. 900 and bronze medal and cash. Rs. 700 respectively. Besides this consolation prizes of Rs. 400,Rs. 300 and two prizes of Rs. 200 each will be given in each category. This contest is held every year in the memory of Bhai Surinder Singh Malik and expenses of the contest are arranged by Bhai Surinder Singh Malik Memorial Medical Education and Research Institute, Nidani Distt. Jind (Haryana).
