CHANDIGARH, SEPT 5
The Haryana Governor, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, has asked the teaching fraternity to encourage students to imbibe positive thoughts and values along with education in the 21st century.
He was speaking after conferring State Awards on 29 teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day at a function held at Raj Bhawan here today. The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Lal, and the Education Minister, Mr Ram Bilas Sharma, were also present.
The Governor conferred State Awards on 29 teachers for their outstanding contribution in the field of education for 2016-17. Each awardee was honoured with a shawl, a citation and Rs 21,000.
Congratulating the teachers on the birth anniversary of former President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Mr Solanki said, “A teacher is a nation-maker in real sense of the term. He shapes the future of a child much the same way as a potter gives shape to the clay. After parents, it is the teacher who helps the children and guides them to the right path. It is for this reason that Dr Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, had dedicated his birthday to teachers”, he added.
Speaking on this occasion, the Chief Minister said good teachers should get themselves transferred to a school or place where the level of education was poor, and put their best efforts to improve things.
Infrastructure could be developed by the state government by building schools, hospitals, roads and other basic structures, but it is only the teacher who creates a civilized person by infusing ethics along with education in a child. The Chief Minister asked teachers to shape the children keeping in view with their taste and skills. The state government is setting up Vishwakarma Skill Development University in Palwal where different courses would be launched to make the students employable.
The Chief Minister said examinations constituted an important part of the education system. The level of education dropped substantially in the country due to implementation of the No Detention Policy by the previous government. But the present government has started monthly tests which has brought about a significant improvement in the performance of government schools.
Board examinations would be started soon in Class VIII. He appreciated the online teacher transfer policy and said that many states had sent teams of their officers to study this transparent policy.
Reiterating the commitment of the state government to provide higher education to every youth of the state, the Chief Minister said mapping had been done to open a college every 20 kms, and 29 new colleges would be opened in next two years.
The Education Minister, Mr Ram Bilas Sharma, said revolutionary changes had taken place in the state in the field of education during the last three years. While the online transfer policy has been implemented for the convenience of teachers, moral education has been introduced in schools. On the lines of the State Teachers’ Award, a function would also be organized to honor such teachers as have excelled in the fields of arts, music, and sports etc.
Those present included Minister of State for Cooperation, Mr Manish Kumar Grover, Additional Chief Secretary, School Education, Dr K.K. Khandelwal, Additional Chief Secretary, Power, Mr P.K. Das, senior officers of the Education Department, and other dignitaries.
