Malaysian Human Rights Commission delegates meet Justice Bhalla

   A two-member delegation of Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) met the Member of Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC), Mr. Justice H.S. Bhalla here today.
          The Malaysian delegation included Ms. Hasmah Abdul Manaf and Mr. Ameer Izyanif Hamzah, Education and Promotion officers at SUHAKAM. The delegation was led by Joint Registrar, Law and Focal Point for Human Rights Defender, National Human Rights Commission of India, Mr. A.K. Parashar.
The delegation exchanged information about the working of HHRC and SUHAKAM. The Headquarters of SUHAKAM is located at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The members of the visiting delegation of Human Rights Commission of Malaysia has praised the functioning of Human Rights Commission in India especially the work of Haryana in a short span of time after its inception.
Mr. Hamzah said that in Malaysia, the Commission has no powers to direct police and issue compensation. Their focus is more on awareness. He said that the SUHAKAM is divided into three groups namely Education and Public Relations Group, Complaints and Enquiry Group and Research and Policy Development Group. All the three groups work in their respective area, he added.
After welcoming the delegation, Mr. Bhalla provided literature of the Commission to the delegates and apprised them about the working and research methods of HHRC. He said that the Commission has been working as a collective team. He said that the Commission is not restricted to Chandigarh and Panchkula only, rather it has been working throughout the state and it has organized several sensitization programmes for Revenue Officers and Police Officers at various places in the State. The topic of Human Rights has also been included in the curriculum. He said that HHRC has been offering internship facilities to students of various universities. Recently, a seminar was organized in Kurukshetra to sensitize the Revenue Officers of the State Government on human rights in which the Governor, Mr. Jagannath Pahadia called upon the officers to become more sensitive towards human rights and individuals.
Mr. Bhalla desired that someday HHRC would also visit SUHAKAM. He said that at present, we have been focusing on Revenue Officers and Police Officers in the state, but soon we will go to the Panchayat level. He said that the Commission would also conduct sensitization programmes for teachers and students.
