Haryana Agriculture Minister O.P. Dhankar today said that the farmers whose crops of cotton and other Kharif crops have been damaged due to whitefly would soon be given compensation.
Mr. Dhankar was talking to media persons after attending the State level oath taking ceremony of newly elected Members of Zila Parishads and Panchayat Samitis, in Karnal.
He said that the Government had already received the report of special girdawari,but disbursement of the compensation was delayed due to imposition of Model Code of Conduct in view of elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions in the State.
In reply to a question, the Minister said that the recommendations of Swaminathan Commission were being implemented in a phased manner as he had mentioned in one of his recommendations that minimum compensation for damage to crops due to natural calamities should be Rs 10,000 per acre whereas present State Government has decided to give compensation at a rate of Rs 12,000 per acre. Similarly, Swaminathan had recommended crop insurance. Mr. Dhanakar said that recently ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’ was announced by the Central Government and it would be implemented from next Kharif season. Under the scheme, farmers would have to pay 1.5 per cent premium for Rabi crops and 2 per cent for Kharif crops. The remaining amount of the premium would be borne equally by the Central and the State Governments, he added.
