Hooda inaugurates Surajkund International Crafts Mela

Haryana Chief Minister  Bhupinder Singh Hooda inaugurated the 28th Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2014 at Surajkund, Faridabad today.
            The Chief Minister inaugurated the Mela by opening the symbolic window of Goa in the august presence of Goa’s Deputy Chief Minister Mr Francis D’Souza, Minister of Tourism Mr Dilip Parulekar, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India Mr Prasad Karlyawasam, Principal Secretary of Goa Tourism Mr Parimal Roy, Chairman of National Crafts Council of Sri Lanka Mr Budhikeerti Sinna, Chairman, Haryana Tourism Corporation, Mr Chakrvrty Sharma, Haryana Minister of State for Information, Public Relations and Cutural Affairs Pt Shiv Charan Lal Sharma, MP from Faridabad Mr Avtar Singh Badana and many other dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that every year the Mela showcase richness and diversity of the handicrafts, handlooms and the cultural heritage of India. He said that the Mela has gained international status, in which about 20 countries are participating and there are 735 work huts for the crafts persons. The Mela is spread in 40 acres of land. He said that Sri Lanka, the ‘Partner Nation’ of the Mela this year, would showcase to the world their identity as a nation, its history, culture, arts, cuisine, customs and traditions; and leave an everlasting memory in the hearts and minds of the people of India who come to Surajkund. This is for the second time after a gap of 12 years that Goa has become the Theme State of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela.    The Goa folk dances, colourful floats and live processions will add to the charm of the Mela.
Mr Hooda also released the calendar of Goa on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Haryana Tourism Corporation, Mr Chakrvrty Sharma said that today is the death anniversary of great freedom fighter Ch. Ranbir Singh Hooda who has played a significant role in the development of Haryana.  He said that under the able guidance of Mr Hooda, Haryana has touched new heights of development in each and every field. He said that Mr. Hooda is the architect of modern Haryana. He said that the main purpose of the Mela is to bring together the artisans from remote areas and to provide them the opportunity to sell their products directly to the buyers without the help of middlemen.
Highlighting the importance of the Mela, the High commissioner of Sri Lanka Mr Prasad Karlyawasam said that Haryana is a very special state in India and the theme state Goa, Haryana and Sri Lanka have very high per capita income. Surajkund Mela which has become an international mela and is a great manifestation of how you provide opportunity to those who need support to develop and advance in what we have in us, he added.
The Vice President of Surajkund Mela Authority and Principal Secretary Haryana Tourism, Mr Vijai Vardhan said that the journey of International Surajkund Crafts Mela Started exactly 28 years ago when Haryana Tourism Corporation invited all the gifted crafts persons, weavers working, living and creating wonder specimens of art in the remote villages and hamlets of India to Suraj kund so that they could showcase what is the best and exclusive in the history and tradition. This year we have crafts persons, weavers, cultural troupes and artistes from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Portugal, Iran, Uganda, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Thailand and the SAARC nations—Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan participating and being with us. Sri Lanka and India are intertwined with each other in respect of history, cricket, cuisine, culture for the last 3000 years. The family of Lord Bhuddha sailed to Sri Lanka to bring the two nations together, he added.
Welcoming the dignitaries, the member of Surajkund Mela Authority and Managing Director of Haryana Tourism, Mrs Sumita Mishra said that Mr Hooda who is also the Minister of Tourism has always been a constant support,  guidance and  has given his personal supervision at all times. She said that this year Goa is the theme state and I expect that everyone who comes here goes back with great experience and memories. It is matter of great joy that our friendly neighbour Sri Lanka is our partner nation this year. The Mela is ultimately a celebration of India’s incomparable heritage, multi varied crafts, culture and cuisine. Now that it is international, it represents a fusion of nations, cultures and artisans from all over the world, she added.
Scintillating performances were presented by cultural artistes from Haryana, Sri Lanka, Goa and Uzbekistan in the open air ‘Chaupal’ within the Mela ground.
