As many as 316 students were awarded degrees and 21 gold medals were awarded at the first convocation of Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS), Hisar today, on the occasion of the 151st birth anniversary of freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai.
Delivering the convocation address, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Mr. Radha Mohan Singh was all praise for the academic achievements and high standards of research at the University. He also appreciated its excellent services to the livestock owners of the State.
Mr. Radha Mohan Singh exhorted the students to have a single goal in life, obtain knowledge regularly, work hard and be determined in the pursuit of their goals. Congratulating the students and their families, the Minister said that graduation holds an important place in every person’s life. He said that education at graduation level is such a milestone which opens the gateway to higher education and a brighter future.
He highlighted some of the major achievements of the University, including its research and contribution in development of a new breed of dairy cattle ‘Hardhenu’, which is a crossbreed of Holstein Friesian, Hariana and Sahiwal breeds. The University has signed eight MoUs with national and international public and private institutions and also established ‘Business Planning and Development Unit and IPR Cell’ for patenting and licensing of technologies, which would help not only the farmers of Haryana but also those of other states.
He said that the University has taken lead role in differentiating cow meat from buffalo meat, besides testing milk and milk products, which is in sync with the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act, 2015, passed recently by the Haryana Government. Under this Act, the Government would establish laboratories for differentiation of beef from the meat of other species of animals, testing and identification of various constituents of milk and milk products and testing and differentiation of A1 and A2 milk for providing incentives for wholesome production of milk and milk products.
He said that Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay’s vision of ‘Antodaya’ could not be accomplished without the empowerment of poor and marginal farmers. In the present Indian context, animal husbandry could fulfil his dream of social and economic inclusion of the last man, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Haryana Governor and Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, congratulated the students and their families and advised them to become better human beings. He said that they should remember five things starting with the letter ‘G’, including ‘Gaaye’, ‘Gita’, ‘Ganga’, ‘Gayatri Mantra’ and ‘Ganesha’. Laying stress on the need for veterinarians, Prof. Solanki said that animal husbandry was becoming increasingly important with the decrease in fertile land holdings.
Addressing the gathering, Haryana Agriculture Minister, Mr. Om Prakash Dhankar, said that Lala Lajpat Rai would always remain a source of inspiration for generations to come. He said that the new graduates would face a number of challenges, including making Haryana the leading producer of milk. Laying emphasis on the need for effectively dealing with the menace of stray cattle, he appealed to the students to work on improving the condition of cattle through increase in their number and productivity.
The Minister said that Haryana should be developed as an advanced organic farming state. He said that 2016 being the golden jubilee year for Haryana, efforts should be made to tackle some of the challenges related to animal health and production this year.
Speaking on the occasion, Haryana Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Dr. Kamal Gupta, said that global warming had become a major problem. Haryana could now contribute to solve this problem at the global level with the inauguration of the International Solar Alliance Interim Secretariat in Gurgaon on January 25, 2016.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Maj. Gen. Shri Kant (Retd.), presented a report of the academic and research activities undertaken by the University over the last five years. Welcoming Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, the Vice-Chancellor lauded him for the special interest taken by him in agricultural and animal husbandry-related activities so as to uplift the farmers of the State.He said that in the field of research, the University developed several new breeds of cattle and poultry, besides developing different tests for various diseases, such as Foot-and-Mouth, Haemorrhagic Septicaemia and Surra.
Those awarded gold medals for excellence in academic and research activities during 2011-15 included Mr. Vikas Rana, Ms. Sunaina, Mr. Snehil Gupta, Mr. Jitender Kumar and Mr. Sumit Sardana, who were awarded the Dr. D.P. Bannerji Gold Medal. Ms. Anu Kumari, Mr. Sunil Kumar and Mr. Snehil Gupta were awarded the Dr. B.D. Gold Medal. Ms. Anu Kumari, Ms. Sunaina, Mr. Snehil Gupta, Ms. Komal and Mr. Sumit Sardana were awarded the Prof. P.K. Dwarkanath Gold Medal. Dr. Kaushlesh Ranjan, Dr. Jitender Yadav and Dr. Sushil Mukul Roy were awarded the Dr. RN Srivastava Gold Medal. Ms. Anu Kumari, Ms. Sunaina, Mr. Snehil Gupta, Ms. Komal and Mr. Vaibhav were awarded the University Gold Medal. In addition, Dr. Prem Singh, Director, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Services Complex, Dr. Sushila Mann and Dr. Rajender Singh were awarded gold medals for excellent work in the areas of teaching, research and extension education, respectively.
