Haryana Finance Minister Capt. Abhimanyu said that the State would definitely build the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal as soon as the Supreme Court delivers verdict favouring its construction.
The Finance Minister was interacting with media persons in the press lobby of Haryana Vidhan Sabha here today.
He said that Chief Minister, Mr. Manohar Lal had strongly pursued this matter of SYL, in which a Presidential Reference was pending in the Supreme Court. However, Punjab passed an unconstitutional Bill. He said that former Punjab Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, who belonged to the Congress, had also broken the inter-state agreement and now the present Punjab Government was doing the same.
He said that Haryana had been suffering injustice for the water of SYL for the last 50 years and the Punjab leadership had continuously carried out unconstitutional and illegal works. He said that the political leadership of Punjab was committing irresponsible acts for their political interests.
The Finance Minister said that former Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had resolved to inter-link the rivers of India and the same has been mentioned in the BJP Manifesto because every person has the right to natural resources. He said that inter-linking of rivers would be in the interest of the states and the nation. He said that the Haryana legislators had unanimously extended support for the State by rising above petty politics. He said that there was one legislators belonging to SAD in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, who had also extended support for Haryana.
Replying to a question, he said that Haryana’s attitude was one of responsibility and patience and work on SYL would be carried out under law. He hoped that the Supreme Court’s verdict would be in favour of Haryana.
Replying to another question, he said that the previous Congress government had unsuccessfully worked on this for the last 10 years, and they did not take the SYL issue ahead. He said that the proceedings were moving ahead due to the efforts of the present State government.
Replying to another question, he said that Haryana Chief Minister would today write to his Punjab counterpart, Mr. Parkash Singh Badal clarifying the situation. He said that in this regard, eight Members of Parliament from Haryana had met Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, who listened to them patently. Discussion was also held with Ministers of departments concerned in this regard, he added.
