With a view to sensitize the society about importance of maintaining a balanced population of human beings and wildlife and also about their existence, the Haryana Government has decided to organize Wildlife Week, 2017 in the State. The main event of Wildlife Week celebration would be organized at Sultanpur National Park in District Gurugram on October 9, 2017 in which Chief Minister; Mr Manohar Lal would be the Chief Guest.
While stating this here today, a spokesman of Forests and Wildlife Department said that Forests and Wildlife Minister, Rao Narbir Singh would preside over the function whereas, Minister of State for Forests and Wildlife, Mr Karan Dev Kamboj would be the special invitee. The existence of healthy environment is the pre-requisite for health, productivity and economic well being of human being, he added.
He said that the special occasion would be marked by an array of events. The Chief Minister would inaugurate an exhibition of Photographs of major water birds both migratory as well as local birds found in Sultanpur National Park. Besides, he would also release a survey report prepared by Bombay Natural History Society.
The spokesman said that the water hyacinth (Jalkumbhi) has become an obnoxious weed and thus menace in management of Wetlands including Sultanpur National Park and yet another Wetland of the State that is Bhindawas in Jhajjar District. The Forests and Wildlife Department in collaboration with NGO, Earth watch has imparted training to the local villagers situated around Bhindawas wetland on use of water hyacinth in handicrafts. The Chief Minister would interact with the local village women and peruse the stall of handicrafts items manufactured by them.
Every year, Forests and Wildlife Department in collaboration with NGO Bombay Natural History Society carries out the survey of migratory water birds visiting Sultanpur National Park or local bird which are permanent resident of this Wetland, he added.
The spokesman said that to develop the younger generation especially the school children of different age group as future leaders in the field of Wildlife Conservation, Forest and Wildlife (Preservation) Department as a prelude to Wildlife Week Celebration, would conduct quiz and painting competitions with the theme of Wildlife. The winners of such competition at the District level would also be felicitated by the hands the Chief Minister.
He said that the Sultanpur National Park being part of NCR, there has been long time demand of providing facilities of camping in or around the park by the schools, avian researchers, birders and keen wildlife photographers. For this purpose, Forest and Wildlife (Preservation) Department is contemplating to establish sufficient numbers of awareness generation huts in the administrative block of the National Park to facilitate the night stay of Wildlife lovers in Sultanpur National Park. The Sultanpur National Park is located 40 kilometers from Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and 15 kilometers from Gurugram on the Ciprugram - Farrukhnagar Road. It is one of the most important wetlands in northern India and a paradise for birders having large varieties of migratory as well as resident birds.
He said that the National Park assumes a special significance because of its close proximity to Delhi. Over 350 species of birds are recorded from this tiny little National Park and in a good year over 30,000 birds could easily be seen. He said that the early birds start arriving in September and most of them reach here by November. Till the following March-April, they use park as resting place since their home land in Europe, Siberia and central Asia are inhabitable due to heavy snow. He said that every year about 50,000 tourists visit this park including nature lovers, wildlife enthusiast, students and photographers.
