CHANDIGARH, AUGUST 6
British Deputy High Commissioner at
Chandigarh, Mr. David Lelliott today called on Haryana Health Minister, Rao
Narender Singh and discussed many issues related to cooperation in the field of
health and medical education.
Mr.
Lelliott apprised Rao Narender Singh that British High Commission would soon
set up its office in Chandigarh. Mr. Lelliott also informed about the General
Practitioner (GP) at primary level in Britain and gained information about the
infrastructure of medical institutions at rural and urban areas in the State.
Rao
Narender Singh informed Mr. Lelliott that Haryana is among those states which
have witnessed massive development in almost all spheres during the last eight
years. During this period, economy of the state has strengthened and now it is
leading in terms of per capita income and investment. He said that though
Maternal Mortality Rate, Infant Mortality Rate and sex ratio have improved in
the State, yet much more needs to be done in this direction for further
improvement.
He
said that under the able leadership of Chief Minister, Mr. Bhupinder Singh
Hooda, the State Government has laid special emphasis on medical education in
the State. A medical university namely Pt. B.D. Sharma University of Health
Sciences has been set up in Rohtak. Apart from this, four new medical colleges
are being set up in the State. All medical institutions in the State have
better infrastructure and people were getting free medical services at the
level of government institutions.
The
Minister expressed his willingness for mutual cooperation with Britain in the
field of medical research, specialization and paramedical education. On this,
Mr. Lelliott assured the Minister that he would ask the High Commission to send
an expert in health and medical education for detailed discussion. Mr. Lelliott
also lauded the works being carried out in the field of medical care.
On
this occasion Principal Secretary, Health, Mrs. Navraj Sandhu, Principal
Secretary, Medical Education, Mr. Siddhi Nath Roy, Director General, Health
Services, Mr. N.K. Arora and Director, Nation Rural Health Mission, Haryana,
Dr. Ravi Kant were also present.
