CHANDIGARH, APRIL 24
The Haryana Government has notified the "Handicraft Awards Scheme" for the grant of awards to artisans, craft persons and weavers of the state for the promotion of handicrafts and related activities.
Stating this here today, a spokesman of the Industries Department said that state awards would be conferred on craft persons and weavers in recognition of their outstanding contribution, craftsmanship and development of art. This recognition will encourage them to pursue with the craft in a more enthusiastic and productive manner, and will ultimately encourage others to emulate them.
State handicraft awards will be conferred on 13 artisans standing first in each of the groups of painting, terracotta, clay objects, stone and marble, embroidery and textile, wood and bamboo, metal, leather, handloom, jute, wax and miscellaneous. These awards also include one for the outstanding woman artisan.
The State Handicraft Award and Outstanding Woman Artisan award carries prize money of Rs 3 lakh each whereas consolation prizes would be for Rs 51,000. Awardees will also be given a merit certificate.
Referring to the eligibility conditions, the spokesman said that handicraft awards would be granted to the artisans/ crafts persons/ weavers of the state having resident proof like Voter Card/ Ration Card/ Adhaar Card/ Domicile Certificate engaged in the manufacture of above sectors/segments. The artisan should be registered with Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India.
Detailing the selection criteria, he said that out of the total 100 marks of merit, 25 each would be for the degree of skill in the craft and creativity in art or design. Fifteen marks each would be meant for traditional technique involved in the craft and resources used for making the artefacts.
While 10 marks would be for the theme and fineness of work, five each would be given for appearance of the product and contribution of the craftsperson to the development of crafts in terms of providing training to other craft persons.
The artisans attaining maximum marks in respect of the criteria of variety and creativity in art will be given priority in case two artisans get equal marks. Artisan once selected for award shall not again be considered during the next 5 Years, which includes the year of selection.
Haryana is known for special handicrafts like Brassware, Jari Jutti, Wood craft, Cloth Paintings, Hand fans, Paper Mackie, Lakh Bangles and Jewellery, Modha making, Terracotta, Stuffed Toys, Carpets, Peedha and Charpai making, Durries, Embroidery, Bead work, Camel Backs, Metal Work, Pottery, Dolls, Fur and Leather Items, Cane and Bamboo items, Crocia and Metal items etc. There are more than 12,000 artisans in the state registered with the Development Commissioner, Handicrafts.
