Live telecast of judicial proceedings

CHANDIGARH, APRIL 24
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal today suggested that the judicial proceedings in the higher courts should be webcast or telecast live like the proceedings of Legislatures and Parliament.
The Chief Minister, who was addressing the conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts in New Delhi, said that it would help in the dissemination of legal knowledge and help in further fostering faith in our judicial system.
He also suggested that efforts should be made to ensure that proceedings of the High Courts are also allowed to be conducted in Hindi or the regional language of the state. “To ward of any misgiving, let me make it clear that judgements could continue to be recorded in English till alternate arrangements are made”, he added.
He said that there is a need to decriminalise some petty offences and an alternative system of social service for reform of those who commit such crimes should be put in place. This could include punishments by way of street sweeping or cleaning for definite period of time along with a longer probation period, the commission of the same offence during which can be punishable with imprisonment.
He also reiterated the commitment of his government for the mission of Speedy Justice for all.
