CM describes ‘honour killing’ as a sin

CHANDIGARH, OCT 5
The Haryana Chief Minister, Mr.Bhupinder Singh Hooda, today described the issue of “honour killing” as a sin and said that the Khap Panchayats have nothing to do with it and their is a need to change the mind set of the people.
          The Chief Minister was replying to the questions of media persons at “Meet the Press” programme at Chandigarh Press Club here today. He said that no body is allowed to take law in his own hands and action is taken against those found indulged in such activities.
          In replying to a question concerning gaining the political mileage from Khap Panchayats, Mr.Hooda said that in politics, he has been making use of the policies of the Congress party and he never uses Khap Panchayats or castesim to gain political mileage. He said that he is a social person.
          He said that the Khap Panchayats have social status in the state but they have no legal sanctity. He said that Khap Panchyats do not kill any one. The incidents of honour killing do not occur only in Haryana but happen all over the country. Generally, the parents of either the boy or the girl are responsible for such incidents, therefore, there was a need to change the mind set of people. Prompt action is taken against those found guilty.    
          Mr.Hooda further said that it was a tradition in this part of the country that people did not solemnize marriages in same “Gotra” and at the same time there were areas where people performed marriages even with close relations.          
In reply to a question concerning law and order situation in the state, Mr.Hooda said that the law and order situation is better and police acts swiftly to check crime.
