CHANDIGARH, AUG 21
The Haryana Government has increased the budget of Science and Technology Department from Rs 4.34 crore in 2005-06 to over Rs 22.34 crore in 2012-13 to promote science and technology in the state.
While stating this here today, an official spokesman said that the Department has taken a number of initiatives, such as- POSE scholarship scheme, Haryana Science Talent Search Scheme and fellowship scheme for Ph.D. scholars to promote basic sciences in the state and to attract more meritorious students towards opting basic science subjects and make it as their career.
He said that under POSE scholarship scheme, the department was providing attractive scholarships of Rs.4000 per month to the B.Sc. (Hons.) students and Rs.6000 per month to the M.Sc. students of
basic sciences, such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology,
Mathematics and Geology. Top ranking 100 students each of above said classes were selected for scholarships on the basis of merit, he added.
Under Haryana Science Talent Search Scheme, top 1000 students in a combined merit list of common exams National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) stage-I and National Merit-cum-Means
Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) were given scholarship at the rate of Rs.500 per month during IX and X classes and Rs.1500 during XI and XII classes, he added.
He said that the fellowship programme was based on National Eligibility Test conducted by CSIR twice in a year. A sum of Rs.12,000 per month for the first two years and Rs.14,000 per month for the third year onwards upto a maximum of five years with annual contingency grant of Rs.20,000 was provided to the research students of science subjects. As many as 39 students had so far been offered fellowships since the inception of the scheme in the year 2009-10.
