The Haryana Government has
taken a number of steps to check road accident in the state. As many as 22
traffic police stations and five traffic police posts have been set up in the
state, besides providing 32 high speed interceptors to the police to control
the menace of over speeding vehicles running beyond the prescribed limit.
This was stated by Haryana Chief Minister, Mr.Bhupinder Singh Hooda while
replying to a question asked by Mr. Sampat Singh, MLA during the second day of
the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha here
today.
He said that as many
as 66,487 violators of the traffic rules had been intercepted by the police and
challaned during the period from January 1, 2012 to July 31, 2012. As many as
43 ambulances had been provided for timely medical assistance to the road
accident victims. Sobriety checkpoints had also been set up and sufficient
Alco-Censors had been provided to check drunken driving in all the districts of
the state. As many as 17,876 drunken drivers had been challaned during this
period.
He said that the menace of overloading of goods vehicles and other offences
were being looked after by the District Traffic Officers and presently by
Secretary, Regional Transport Authority under the overall control of Transport
Department. Police help was provided to them as and when demanded. Road safety
awareness campaigns, seminars, painting competitions, etc. were launched
throughout the state. Road safety organization had also been created which was
working efficiently in each district and supporting the police in its road
safety awareness campaigns.
As many as 1170 accident prone points had been identified in the state, out of
which 803 points had been rectified and other accidents prone points would be
rectified very shortly. In addition, 1051 points had been identified for
construction of speed breakers, out of which 810 speed breakers had already
been constructed on various roads, he added.
The Chief Minister said that the traffic control room had been established with
headquarters at Karnal with facilities of accident helpline toll free number
1073, which was functioning round the clock. Over speeding vehicles,
drunken drivers and drivers who are not wearing helmets, not using seat belts,
using mobile phones while driving, over loaded vehicles with passengers, etc.
were being challaned regularly. As many as 9,64,750 vehicles were challaned
during the period. Besides, 16018 maxi cabs were also challaned during the period.
From January 1, 2000 to August 15, 2012, as many as 24,039 people were missing
in the state since Jan 2000 to August 15, 2012 and 6589 persons had been
declared proclaimed offenders by the police and courts since Jan 2000 till July
31, 2012.
