Hooda announces cash awards to Haryana Olympians

CHANDIGARH, August 14
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has announced to give Rs. 31 lakh as cash reward to Haryana’s ace thrower Krishna Punia for competing in the final of the discus throw at the recently concluded Olympic Games in London.
          This was disclosed by Additional Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Dr K. K. Khandelwal while interacting with mediapersons here today.
          He said that in all ten players had competed in the final of discus throw and Krishna Punia ranked seventh in the world. This is a significant achievement, which has been recognized by the Chief Minister.
          Dr Khandelwal said that Mr Hooda also announced to give a cash reward of Rs 21 lakh each to boxer Vijender Singh and wrestler Amit Kumar for qualifying for quarter finals in London Olympics. He said that Mr Hooda also announced to give Rs 21 lakh to Geeta Phogat for becoming the first ever Indian women wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics.
          He said that out of six medals won by India in London Olympics, four medals have been won by players hailing from Haryana or those who are associated with the State.
          It may be recalled that Chief Minister has already announced to give Rs 1.50 crore to wrestler Sushil Kumar for winning Silver in London Olympics and Rs. one crore each to shooter Mr Gagan Narang,badminton sensation Saina Nehwal and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt for winning Bronze medals in London Olympics.
          He said that the other 11 participants in Olympic Games, who hail from Haryana, have also been given Rs 11 lakh each. They included Jai Bhagwan, Manoj Kumar, Sanjeev Rajput, Sardara Singh, Vikas Krishan, Seema Antil, Sumit Sangwan, Om Parkash, Anuraj Singh and Sandeep Singh.
          Dr Khandelwal said that Mr Hooda has given cash rewards to these sportspersons in recognition of their exemplary performance in London Olympics. Their performance will inspire many others to take keen interest in sports.
