CHANDIGARH, JAN 5
With a view to reducing road accidents, Haryana Government is
considering to implement a unique scheme under which arrangement would
be made for truck drivers to take rest and get their goods protected.
Also, Road Safety Clubs would be opened in schools and colleges at
district level.
This
was disclosed by Additional Chief Secretary, State Transport
Department, Mr. Ramendra Jakhu while addressing the gathering at a state
level function organized to observe 24thRoad Safety Week at Panchkula, near here, today.
He
said that negotiations were going on with some companies to formulate
this new scheme for truck drivers. It was observed that truck drivers do
not get proper rest due to intoxication and continuous driving. Also,
they do not sleep as they carry goods worth lakhs of rupees. Therefore,
in many cases accidents occur due to excessive fatigue and lack of
sleep.
He said that Haryana State Transport Department would set up Road
Safety Clubs in schools and colleges at district level so as to impart
training and information regarding road safety rules to the youth. He
said that a provision of Rs 45 lakh has been made for setting up of
these clubs. He said that driving schools were being run in Bahadurgarh,
Rohtak, Kaithal and Bhiwani by the State Government with the technical
assistance of private companies like TATA, Maruti and Ashok Leyland. “We
are trying to open these schools in each district,” he added.
He
said that it has also been observed that people sitting on back seats
do not wear seat belts and get injured in accidents which could be
prevented.
Mr.
Jakhu said that road safety is not only the responsibility of any
organization or institution, but it is a collective responsibility of
all of us which we all have to perform. He said that 90 per cent of
the accidents occur due to over speed. Every person should follow each
and every rule only then we could be able to reduce road accidents.
Speaking
on the occasion, Haryana Transport Commissioner, Mrs. Sumita Misra said
that State Government has improved 670 accident prone areas out of the
about 1000 such ne areas in the State.
Deputy
Commissioner, Panchkula, Mrs. Ashima Brar also spoke on this occasion. A
play on road safety entitled as ‘Sadak Hamare Baap Ki’ was also enacted
by Theatre Art Chandigarh Group which was highly appreciated.
