CHANDIGARH, JAN 29
The scientists of
Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar have developed
five new hybrid varieties of wheat, Bajra and oil seeds.
While
stating this today, a spokesman of the University said that these varieties
included HHB-234 of Bajra, WH 1105 and WHD 948 of wheat, RH 0479 of mustard and
HT 9713/HT2 of Sesame. He said that these varieties have been released and
notified by the Central Variety Release and Notification Committee (CVRC) for
cultivation.
He
said that wheat variety WH 1105 is a bread wheat variety which has been
released and notified for cultivation under timely sown irrigated conditions in
the Northern Western Plain Zone (NWPZ) of the country
comprising Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu
and Kashmir and foot-hills of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In
national trials, WH 1105 gave an average yield of 52.5 quintals per hectare and
potential yield of 71.6 quintals per hectare. He said that it out yielded the
popular wheat varieties namely PBW-343, PBW-17, PBW 550 and HD 2967 by a margin
of 8.69, 1.54, 5.62 and 0.95 per cent, respectively. It matures in
144 days. It also possessed high degree of resistance to yellow and
brown rusts, flag smut, leaf blight and powdery mildew diseases. He
said that it has 12.5 per cent protein content with better chapatti making
score and high sedimentation value of 53ml. He said that
another wheat variety, WHD 948 is a drum wheat variety which
has been released and notified for cultivation in the Peninsular Zone
consisting of Maharashtra and Karnataka, the major durum wheat growing
states.
He said
that Mustard variety RH 0749 has been released and notified for cultivation
under timely sown and irrigated conditions in Zone II comprising of Haryana,
Punjab, Jammu Kashmir, Delhi and Western Rajasthan. He said that
this variety possessed 15 per cent yield advantage over the existing
high yielding varieties owing to long and thick siliquae having more number of
seeds per siliqua. This variety gave an average yield of 26.28
quintals per hectare in about 146 to 148 days. The seeds of this
variety are bold and have 39 to 40 per cent oil content.
He
said that hybrid HHB 234 of Bajra has been notified for release and cultivation
in A1 Zone of the country which comprise Haryana, Rajasthan and other parts of
the country receiving rain fall less than 400mm per annum. This hybrid has
been recommended specially for rain fed conditions of the
country. This hybrid has candle shaped ear heads and possesses high
yield potential under rain fed conditions and it could give higher yield of 45
quintals per hectare under normal conditions. This hybrid is highly
resistant to downy mildew disease and matures in 68 to 70 days.
He
said sesame variety HT2 possessed high yield potential with 15 to 25 per cent
yield superiority over the check varieties and illustrated multiple resistances
against leaf curl virus and phyllody diseases. White seeds dark
green leaves and long hairy capsules are other enumerating characteristics of
this variety, he added.
He
said that these varieties would definitely play a pivotal role in improving the
livelihood and economic well being of the farmers apart from enhancing the
overall productivity.
