Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court Mr Justice
Augustine George Masih met drivers of battery driven auto-rickshaws
provided by district administration at Traffic Park in Sirsa today and saw for
himself the auto-rickshaw known as ‘Garud’.
While giving this information
today, an official spokesman said that Justice Masih was highly impressed with
this scheme of the district administration and said that it was the best
practice to provide such source of income to the needy and the poor people.
“This project would prove to be a milestone in ensuring the welfare of families
of these auto rickshaw drivers”, he added.
He said that Justice Masih
also shared views with them about their experiences before and after receiving
these vehicles. He along with District and Sessions Judge Mr. Subhash Goyal and
Deputy Commissioner Dr. J Ganeshan took a ride in ‘Garud’ and described it as
comfortable and safe.
It may be recalled that
battery driven auto-rickshaws have been provided to 40 rickshaw pullers free of
cost by the district administration under the Backward Area Grant Scheme. These
rickshaw pullers who earlier used to earn only Rs. 150 per day were today
earning Rs. 600 per day through these battery run auto-rickshaws. After getting
this vehicle, the living standard of these rickshaw pullers has
enhanced. These drivers have even acknowledged that after receiving these
vehicles they have left the habit of intoxication as earlier they used
to drive rickshaw through paddles and because of fatigue they had become
addicted to liquor. Now they run battery driven auto-rickshaws comfortably and
have shunned their habit of taking liquor. Justice Masih expressed happiness
with the significant change in the lifestyle of these drivers. He also
appreciated the district administration for this scheme.
