Dr Satya Vrat awarded fellowship by BMA

 Dr. Satya Vrat Sharma, Member of the Order of the British Empire,who hails from Hisar in Haryana State and is an alumnus of Medical College, Rohtak has been awarded fellowship by British Medical Association (BMA) for his remarkable contributions to healthcare in Wolverhampton and United Kingdom.
The award will be conferred upon him in the President’s Investiture Ceremony during annual general conference of BMA to be held in Edinburgh on June 25, 2013. The BMA of United Kingdom has a membership of about 1.20 lakh doctors and confers honorary award of fellowship upon three-four  doctors annually.
Dr. Sharma has served National Health Service of United Kingdom for 36 years. He has been a General Medical Practitioner 31 years prior to his retirement in March, 2013. He has served as Chairman of Wolverhampton Medical Committee for 8 years (2005-2013) and member of General Practice Practitioner’s Committee of BMA for 9 years (2002-2011). He has earned reputation in the field of organ donation and is known for his efforts of increasing awareness among ethnic minorities.
He is the son of the late Kok Chandra Shastri, a freedom fighter and journalist.He emigrated to the UK in 1977 and joined the National Health Service there. He is the Chairman of Wolverhampton division of the British Medical Association (BMA), Chairman of the local Medical Committee and Vice- Chairman of regional council of the BMA, West Midlands.
He was the first Asian to be appointed Police Surgeon at Wolverhampton. He is a founder member of the committee in Wolverhampton that generates funds for the prevention of coronary heart diseases. He has also completed a project for prevention of obesity among children in collaboration with the Imperial College, London.
Now a  citizen of United Kingdom as well as India, Sharma has established a Charitable Trust that awards grants to poor students all over India.He has set up another trust to give scholarship to students of Sanskrit and Hindi at Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
Earlier, Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom had given him the prestigious MBE as a part of the Queen’s birthday honour on March 01, 2011. Dr. Sharma to his credit has many firsts in the city in the fields including fund holding pilot, coronary heart disease audit, quality team development, warfarin monitoring service for all practices in Bilston, highest achieving practice in flu immunization, high achieving practice in quality and outcome framework.
Dr. Sharma has contributed a lot in the field of community service and education. He is a founder member of organizing committee to generate funds for coronary heart disease prevention in Wolverhampton, created a sub group to write on this topic and developed and published literature in five commonly spoken Asian languages to help prevention of Coronary heart disease for the first time in the country. He also completed a specific project for prevention of obesity in children and parents with the help of Imperial College London. He has been in touch and contact with people through different programmes of outreach and different platforms like radio, community meetings, committees, publications, etc.He has been visiting different universities and institutes for educating students.
