Retd GNDU Professor Hans honoured

 Dr. Sujit Hans, retired  Professor of History from Guru Nanak Dev University,  Amritsar has been honoured by Shakespeare Association of India for his extraordinary achievement of  translating all the 39 plays of Shakespeare into Panjabi in the Kurukshetra University Senate Hall today.

        He was honoured by Lt. Gen. Dr. D.D.S. Sandhu, Vice Chancellor Kurukshetra University (KU) who was the chief guest of the function.

        Speaking on the occasion Dr. Sandhu said that Professor Hans has not only helped Punjabis all over the globe in understanding the works of Shakespeare by these translations, but  he has also helped Punjabi language by enriching it through  his intervention in folk traditions and local dialect for search of right words.

        Professor Hans said that he began work on the project in 1993 by translating Othello. He had developed a love of Shakespeare as a student at Hoshiarpur's Punjab University in 1953 where he was taught by Professor Dinah Stock who staged the bard's plays.

        President of the Shakespeare Association and former Vice Chancellor of KU, Professor Bhim S. Dahiya said that there is certain robustness in the language and culture of Punjab which closely resembles the language and culture of Shakespeare’s England. It is quite remarkable that Professor Hans took care to use the spoken language for retaining the vibrancy of the original English, which ranges from rural rusticity to royal elegance, he added.

        The messages of Professor R.S.White, University of Western Australia and Professor Rita Severi from University of Verona Italy were read out in the function.
