Patients suffered damage to their eyes being treated at PGI Chandigarh: Vij

CHANDIGARH, DEC 1
Haryana Health Minister, Mr. Anil Vij said that the patients who suffered damage to their eyes following surgery conducted by a private hospital in Ambala are being treated at PGIMER, Chandigarh. The entire expenditure of their treatment is being borne by the Haryana Government.
The Health Minister today visited PGIMER to enquire about their health and asked them about the whole incident. He said that recently, the eyes of 15 patients were damaged following surgery conducted by a charitable hospital in Ambala. The said hospital had charged Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 from the patients for conducting the surgery. But the Haryana Government had decided to get their treatment done from PGIMER so that they may not face any problem. He said that with the alertness of doctors of PGIMER, eyes of 14 patients have been saved from getting damaged and it is expected that their vision would be restored within next five to six weeks. Apart from this, one patient has undergone cornea transplant.
Mr. Vij said that a three-member committee comprising SDM Ambala, Civil Surgeon and an eye-specialist of Health Department, has been constituted for investigation of this matter. He said that strict action would be taken if any irregularity is found on the part of the hospital administration. He said that the patients would be provided all facilities free of cost by the government.
Head of Ophthalmology Department, PGIMER, Dr. Jagat Ram, said that when these patients came to the hospital, their condition was very bad, but this situation is now under control. He said that prima facie, this appears to be a case of infection. However, the facts would come to light only after the investigation of the entire incident. The hospital would spare no efforts to restore the eyesight of these patients and it is hoped that they would recover fully within the next two months, he added.
