PR Sreejesh claims The World Games Athlete of the Year 2021 title

 LAUSANNE (SWITZERLAND), JAN 31

PR Sreejesh, the goalkeeper who played a crucial role in helping India’s men claim a first Olympic medal in over four decades when they won bronze at last year’s Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, has been named as The World Games Athlete of the Year for 2021.

 In a global fan vote conducted on TheWorldGames.org, Sreejesh finished well clear at the top of the 24-strong nomination list, with his 127,647 voting tally being almost twice as many as the second placed athlete, Spain’s Sport Climbing ace Albert Ginés López, who garnered 67,428 votes.

 Sreejesh becomes the second hockey player to win the award, following in the footsteps of compatriot and India women’s captain Rani, who took the 2019 prize.

 Speaking about the Award, the shot-stopper – who was also voted as FIH Goalkeeper of the Year for 2021 – said: "I'm very honoured to win this award. First of all, a big thank you to FIH for nominating me for this award, and secondly thanks to all the Indian hockey lovers around the world, who voted for me. By getting nominated I did my part, but the rest was done by the fans and hockey lovers. So, this award goes to them, and I think they deserve this award more than me. It's a big moment for Indian Hockey as well because everyone in the hockey community, all the hockey federations around the world voted for me, so it's great to see that support from the hockey family."

 "Also, I am a person who doesn't believe in individual awards, especially when you are part of a team”, continued Sreejesh, a veteran of 244 senior international matches. “It's not only the team of 33 players, but you have a lot of people involved behind as well, there's coaching staff, there's support staff, there's a great association like Hockey India who is supporting you a lot, there's Sports Authority of India (SAI), who are providing you with all the world-class facilities to train, there's Odisha Government who’s unwavering support helps the sport grow and flourish and there's India Olympic Association (IOA) as well, who re taking care of you really well. So, it's a collective effort of a nation to get this kind of recognition."

 FIH Chief Executive Officer Thierry Weil said: “On behalf of the global hockey community, I’d like to wholeheartedly congratulate PR Sreejesh for this magnificent achievement. This is a great recognition for him, for his team and for hockey as a whole. We also extend our sincerest thanks to all fans who voted for him. Athletes are the best ambassadors of our sport and India’s goalkeeper certainly is a leader in this field too. We look forward to seeing him in action again in just a few days for the third edition of the FIH Hockey Pro League!”

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association with the support of the International Olympic Committee. Indoor Hockey featured as an invitational sport at The World Games in 2005, which took place in Duisburg, Germany. Further requirements for ANA athletes

Further to the World Athletics Council decision on 1 December 2021 to approve amendments to the Authorised Neutral Athlete (ANA) programme for 2022 on the recommendation of the Russian Taskforce, the Doping Review Board (DRB) reviewed and revised the process and the criteria for ANA applications.

Athletes will need to follow the procedures set out in the guidance documents and all applications must be forwarded to World Athletics through RusAF.

Applications must be submitted no later than four weeks before the entry deadline for the international competition for which eligibility is sought and the Doping Review Board may require an applicant to undergo additional testing prior to granting him or her ANA status.

The Russian Federation (RusAF) may choose which 20 athletes (in total, not per competition) will be granted eligibility to compete (as ANAs) in the following international competitions:

(a) the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championship to be held in Muscat, OMA, in March 2022;

(b) the World Athletics Indoor Championships to be held in Belgrade, SRB, in March 2022;

(c) the World Athletics Championships to be held in Oregon, USA, in July 2022;

(d) the European Championships to be held in Munich, GER, in August 2022;

(e) the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships to be held in Yangzhou, CHN, in November 2022.

(f) the European Cross Country Championships to be held in Turin, ITA, in December 2022.

The 20 selected ANAs must be chosen from athletes in the International Registered Testing Pool in priority to any other athletes. No changes may be made to the 20 designated ANAs, for any reason, once they have been nominated by RusAF.

In addition, the ANA quota of 20 will be automatically reduced by 25% for each separate failure to comply with the ANA requirements (whether of additional testing or otherwise).

There is no cap on the number of Russian athletes who may compete (if invited, and if they have been granted ANA status) in international competitions that are not listed above. And no cap applies to the World Athletics U20 Championships to be held in Cali, COL, in August 2022.

The DRB has today requested RusAF to provide a ‘long list’ identifying to the best of RusAF’s knowledge and after careful consideration, those athletes (a maximum of 50) from which RusAF expects to choose its quota of 20 ANAs for major championships.

To ensure that the ‘long list’ of ANA athletes continue to undergo adequate testing throughout the season (after they are granted ANA status) RusAF is required to:

Confirm to the AIU two weeks before the date of each competition throughout the season at which a ‘long list’ ANA athlete intends to compete that:

• for athletes seeking to compete in a senior World Championships or Area Championships event, in the 10 months prior to the competition, the athlete has undergone at least three no notice out-of-competition tests, including (if they compete in any middle distance event from 800m upwards, a long distance event, a combined event or a race walk event) at least one ABP and one EPO test, all such tests to be conducted no less than three weeks apart; and,

• for athletes seeking to compete in any other competition, that in the 12 months prior to the competition, the athlete has undergone at least three no notice out-of-competition tests, all such tests to be conducted no less than three weeks apart.

Should RusAF wish, in an exceptional case, to choose an athlete to make up their quota of 20 ANAs who is not on their ‘long list’, RusAF must advise the DRB as soon as possible, but in any event, no less than six weeks before the first day of competition. Furthermore, at the time the athlete is named as a quota athlete, the DRB may require the athlete to undergo additional testing prior to competition.

The DRB also requires that to ensure that out-of-competition tests are carried out over a sufficient interval, a period of at least six months must have elapsed between the first and last out-of-competition tests on which the athlete relies. Should an applicant fail to meet that requirement, the DRB may direct the athlete to undergo additional testing prior to competition as a condition of granting ANA status.

SA's Dewald Brevis and England's Tom Prest played captain’s innings

 BASSETERRE ( ST KITTS AND NEVIS), JAN  18

South Africa’s Dewald Brevis and England’s Tom Prest played captain’s innings to propel their sides to victory at the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Brevis cracked 108 and took the final wicket as South Africa downed Uganda by 121 runs in Trinidad, an emphatic response to their opening Group B defeat at the hands of India. Prest made 93 at a run-a-ball before chipping in with two wickets to see England to a 106-run victory over Canada, making it back-to-back Group A wins in the process.

England show off batting firepower

England only needed to chase down 98 to win their opening game against Bangladesh but could flex their batting muscles when inserted by Canada at Warner Park.

Jacob Bethell (7) was bowled in the seventh over, bringing together George Thomas and captain Tom Prest who immediately took the game to the Canadian bowling attack. Prest was particularly good at picking length and pealed a pair of fours from the final over of the powerplay, which England ended at 48 for one. He also played an inventive scoop off Gurnek Singh for four behind square and brought up his half-century in 58 balls.

Prest lost Thomas midway through the innings when he played a tentative push and missed, bowled for 52 at 116 for two. He was ably supported by James Rew (33) and when the skipper was trapped in front for a run-a-ball 93, the momentum was maintained by William Luxton and George Bell.

The buccaneering pair struck five sixes between them with Bell responsible for three in an eye-catching 57 from just 35 balls. That took England to 320-7 from 50 overs.

England got rid of Canada opener Siddh Lad (5) in the fifth over but were met with firm resistance in the form of a second-wicket stand worth 60.

Keeper-batter Anook Chima made a measured 38 from 65 balls and Yasir Mahmood (25) joined him at the crease for a productive ten overs. Skipper Prest got rid of Mahmood and then four wickets fell for 35 runs as the Canadian run chase floundered.

England were defied by Gurnek Singh, who hit four fours and two sixes, and Ethan Gibson who also played a range of attacking shots in a seventh-wicket stand worth 74. But Josh Boyden took control with the ball and snaffled three of the last four wickets to fall to tear 4-44, his second four-wicket hall in as many games. Canada were only bowled out in the penultimate over, for 214.

‘Baby AB’ puts on a show

Having elected to make first use of the Queen’s Park Oval pitch, the young Proteas stuttered and lost openers Ethan-John Cunningham (1) and Valintine Kitime (12) in the powerplay.

That brought Brevis to the crease, with the starlet nicknamed ‘Baby AB’ hoping to build on his fine 65 in a tournament-opening loss to India. He cracked a pair of back-foot boundaries from the second and third balls he faced and pulled medium pacer Yunusu Sowobi dismissively for six in the 13th over.

Brevis’s fast start allowed skipper George Van Heerden to play on the undercard and the pair combined for 74 before the latter pulled a full toss to Fahad Mutagana at 113 for three. Brevis pressed on, scoring heavily behind square on the off side and building a half-century partnership with Kaden Solomon that ended when the keeper-batter was stumped at 166 for four.

Wickets fell around him regularly but with a quick single in the 41st over, Brevis brought up a superb century from 108 balls and lifted his side above 200. The innings petered out somewhat and South Africa lost their last five wickets for 24 runs thanks to seamers Juma Miyagi (3-33) and Pascal Murungi (3-58).

Uganda also found the powerplay overs tough going and left-armer Aphiwe Mnyanda turned the screw early on, castling Ronald Omara in the second over. Mutagana and Isaac Ategeka steadied the ship and got to 33 for one before the former nicked off to Solomon to give Mnyanda another.

That would prove the biggest partnership of the innings as Uganda subsided to 110 all out, losing their last five wickets for 24 runs.

Brevis was the undisputed star of the show with bat and ball, also chipping in with 2-18 and bowling Juma Miyai to take the wicket that sealed victory.

South Africa finish their Group B campaign against Ireland on Friday while Uganda face group leaders India on Saturday.

Afghanistan excel with bat and ball

Afghanistan, quarter-finals at the last edition of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, made a steady start but were rocked by shedding three wickets in four overs inside the powerplay.

Mohammad Ishaq (21) was brilliantly caught by Peter Karoho, Bilal Sayedi (12) was comprehensively bowled and Allah Noor (2) flicked to a fielder as they sank to 40 for three.

The innings hinged on the fourth-wicket stand between captain Suliman Safi and Ijaz Ahmadzai, who took the game away from PNG with a partnership of 105.

They struck a perfect balance between attack and defence and dealt primarily in boundaries, with 44 of Safi’s 62 runs coming from fours and Ahmadzai striking seven fours and a six. They were separated by Katenalaki Singi at 145-4 and his superb spell of 4-18 from five overs helped bowl Afghanistan out for 200 in 38.2 overs.

But PNG, appearing at the event for the eighth time, never looked likely to chase it down and it was downhill from the moment that Karoho was bowled on the first ball of the innings.

The Afghan attack all excelled and emerged with remarkable figures, with Naveed Zadran taking 2-9 from five overs and Nangeyalia Kharote 2-5 from three. With No.8 Aue Oru top-scoring with 13, PNG were dismissed for 65 from 20.5 overs. Next up for Afghanistan is rivals Pakistan on Thursday, who PNG then face on Saturday.

“Nothing Like it in India, Nothing Better in Britain”

CHANDIGARH, JAN 15

In 1959,  Dr. Bhagvantam, director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, described it thus to Prof. Morris Travers, its first Director (1911 - 1914). The famed Institution which today draws top researchers not only from India but also from beyond its shores, was the subject of a lecture (webinar) organized by the Society for Promotion of Science of Science & Technology in India (SPSTI), with Chandigarh Chapter of the National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) and Chandigarh chapters of INSA & INYAS in association with Punjab Engineering College (PEC) (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh with support from Haryana State Council for Science, Innovation & Technology (HSCSIT), DST, Govt. of Haryana.

It was the seventh of the eighteen part lecture  series devoted to ‘Institution Building & Nurturing Initiative in Independent India’ to commemorate Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The lecture entitled “Indian Institute of Science: Evolution over a Century” was delivered by Padma Bhushan Prof. P. Balaram, Former Director, IISc Bangalore on January 15, 2022 at 11.00 am through online mode. The session was attended online on zoom and many more viewed the same on the Facebook page of SPSTI.

While commemorating 75 years of Indian independence it is useful to look at the decades which came before, when foundations of many institutions were laid. Prof. Balaram said Jamsetji Tata must be remembered as one of the remarkable Indians of the 19th century, much of whose vision was realized by his successors during the 20th century. In 1892 Jamsetji met Swami Vivekananda who was going to deliver a talk about religion in Chicago. In 1896, he wrote a letter to the governor outlining of proposals and in 1898 it was presented to Lord Curzon. Along with this, he wrote the letter to Vivekananda.

 The Indian Institute of Science came into existence on May 27, 1909 formally. It was a three-way collaboration between House of Tatas, Government of India (the British government) and the Maharaja of Mysore. The Institute then had only two departments - General and Applied Chemistry and Electrotechnology,  reflecting the two things important for the industrialization of India at the beginning of 20th century. Besides Jamsetji Tata, Lord Curzon, Swami Vivekananda, Burjorji Padshah and Sister Nivedita were major characters in the story of IISc.
He shared many letters, accumulated laboriously by him from various archives, exchanged in the process of establishing IISc. Lord Curzon reportedly said, when he saw the Tata proposal, “To start with polytechnics, and so on, is like presenting a naked man with a top hat when what he wants is a pair of trousers.” The complex interplay between Indian and British leaders, who were influenced by different traditions of higher education throughout the world, as seen in the 16 years struggle to realize J.N. Tata's dream, is a missing chapter in the study of higher education in India. Lord Raeay, the Governor, Padshah and William Travers also contributed to its establishment. The grant needed for building the institute came from the Government and the land from the Maharaja of Mysore, who also gave a large monetary grant.
The speaker also shared how Bangalore was selected in preference to Rurki! Padshah was in correspondence with Sir William Ramsay, the Nobel Laureate Chemist, who suggested thet Travers be appointed as the Director. Prof. Balaram also talked about the governing council at that time that included viceroy as the patron and the vice patrons being the governors of the various provinces giving the institute its resilience.

In a 1912 a memorial to Jamshetji Tata was erected and in 1922 his statue was built in the Institute.  The institutions that have emerged from the Indian Institute of Science are Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai; HAL, Bangalore; ISRO; Central Food Technology Research Institute, Mysore; National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. He concluded by saying it was the vision of Jamsetji Tata who conceived the idea of India’s most accomplished and most visible institution.

Earlier, Dr. Sanjeev Khosla, Director, IMTECH introduced the Guest of Honour, Padma Shri Prof. Gowri Shankar, Director, IISER Mohali. The speaker was introduced by Prof. R. Kishor Srivastava, IMTECH.The session was much appreciated by the audience and followed with intense discussions and questions. Shri Dharam Vir, IAS (Retd.), the President of SPSTI presented the vote of thanks. Others present on the occasion were Prof. Keya Dharamvir, General Secretary, SPSTI, Ms. Rajni Bhalla. Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, Former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University and Vice President of SPSTI .
