Senior Medical Officer (SMO) and Consultant Pediatrician of Haryana Health
Department,Dr Vishesh Kumar has been selected by the World Health
Organization (WHO) South East Asia Region to provide technical assistance
and leadership in Africa for Global Polio Eradication.
Dr Vishesh Kumar is serving as Sub Regional Team Leader of WHO in Delhi
and he has been on deputation with WHO for last nine years. Before
joining WHO on deputation, he was SMO in General Hospital, Gurgaon.
Polio has been declared as a public health emergency by WHO. At
present cases of Polio have been found in three countries of the world namely
Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Dr. Vishesh Kumar would be placed in Nigeria
where there is persistent transmission of wild polio virus.
India has become polio free since January 13, 2011. Dr. Vishesh
Kumar has a rich experience of working in hotspot of polio cases in India as
well as sub Saharan Africa. Last year he has helped Republic of Uganda to
achieve polio eradication.
Dr Vishesh has also done distinguished work to curb female
foeticide. Health Department Haryana has nominated him as a special invitee to
state supervisory board of PNDT in the State. Dr. Vishesh Kumar is also an
associate member of Board of trustees of Smt. Santra Devi Health and
Educational Trust (SDHE), Mohanpur. This trust is working for the cause of
children and mothers of most rural and down trodden areas of south
Haryana. Dr. Balraj Singh Yadav, a renowned Pediatrician of Gurgaon and
Dr Vishesh are working as national coordinators for Infant Young Child Feeding
(IYCF) practices to combat the issue of malnutrition. Both of them have been
instrumental in framing the National Guidelines for IYCF. These guidelines have
been accepted by the Government of India.
