Facility for lactating mothers

CHANDIGARH, AUG 23
With a view to ensuring privacy, separate rooms would be provided for the lactating mothers, including employees and patients, visiting medical institutions and health centres in Haryana for medical check-up.
Stating this here today, a spokesman of the Health Department said that the decision had been taken under the flagship Mothers’ Absolute Affection (MAA) programme launched recently by the Central Government under the National Health Mission.
Under this programme, the Central Government would spread awareness about the importance of breast-feeding among 3.9 crore pregnant and lactating women, 8.8 lakh ASHA workers, officers and employees. Besides, skilled support for breast-feeding would be provided at 18,000 delivery centres in public health facilities.
The spokesman said that four key messages would be delivered under this programme. These include initiation of breast-feeding within the first hour of birth, exclusive breast-feeding for first six months, complementary foods along with breast-feeding after six months, and breast-feeding up to two years of age. Exclusive breast-feeding up to six months can reduce infant mortality rate due to diarrhoea and pneumonia.
Under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Yojana’, medical check-up of pregnant women is conducted on the ninth day of each month. Under the MAA programme, these women would also be made aware about various aspects related to breast-feeding during the check-up, the spokesman added.
