CHANDIGARH, DEC 15
Principal Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, has made it clear that there is no such condition that compensation would be awarded to farmers only if crops get damaged due to natural calamities in the entire village. Compensation would be awarded keeping in view the area where the crops have been damaged.
Presiding over a meeting of deputy commissioners, officers of the Agriculture Department in districts, banks and insurance companies, through video-conferencing here today, Dr Likhi said similarly, if crops got damaged due to unseasonal rains and cyclones within 14 days of harvesting, compensation would be awarded at field level.
"In both cases, there is no such condition under which compensation would be awarded only if crops in the entire village get damaged", he averred.
After harvesting, if the average production is found to be less than set average production, compensation would be awarded to the farmers of the village on assessment basis. In case of disaster, a local committee would determine the compensation. The committee would include one representative each of the Agriculture Department and insurance company and the farmers. The insurance company has no role during harvesting, Dr Likhi said.
With a view to making the farmers in Haryana aware about the benefits of getting their crops insured under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’, camps, seminars and symposiums would be organised under a special campaign up to December 31, 2016.
Banks have been directed to prepare a list of the farmers before December 20, 2016 so that there should be no problem in deducting insurance premium. The record of farmers who have taken loans should be updated so that they do not face any problem.
Dr. Likhi said that the farmers should be informed about the benefits and provisions of the scheme and their myths cleared. Besides, better coordination should be set up between banks and insurance companies. He also reviewed various works being carried out under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’ and issued directions.
