Haryana planning to procure robotic machine for sewer cleaning

CHANDIGARH, APRIL 23
 Haryana Government is considering to arrange robotic machine for sewer cleaning so that safai karamcharis would not have to enter into sewers.
This was informed by Minister of State for Public Health Engineering, Dr. Banwari Lal while addressing a press conference at Hisar today.
He said that the state government would give financial assistance of up to Rs 10 lakh to dependents of Safai Karamcharis, in case of death caused while cleaning sewers. Since 1993, 117 such cases have come to notice of the State Government and their report has been forwarded to the Finance Department for approval. Soon after getting approval, the financial assistance would be granted to the dependents. Some of the families have already been provided the financial assistance.
He said that it was a long pending demand of Safai Karamcharis to provide financial assistance to their dependents in case of death caused while cleaning sewers, but the previous governments had not given any attention to their demand. He said that understanding the sensitivity of this matter, the Chief Minister, Mr. Manohar Lal got prepared a scheme for redressal of this issue and sent 117 such cases to Finance Department for approval. He said that Safai Karamcharis are the key link to the Swachhta Abhiyan. Therefore, the State Government has taken every possible step for redressal of their complaints and fulfilling their demands.
Earlier inaugurating the ‘Safai Karmi Suraksha Prashikshan Shivir’, the Minister said that this camp has been organised to inform safai karamcharis about safety equipment and other safety measures while cleaning sewers. The inauguration of this camp was on the basis of a pilot project in Hisar. Thereafter, such camps would be organised all across the state.
He said that maximum cases of deaths and other incidents take place when safai karamcharis entre sewers for cleaning.
          On being asked about corruption, he said that the present State Government has been working with Zero Tolerance policy to provide transparent and corruption-free governance to people.
          Speaking on the incidents of rape, Dr. Banwari Lal said that such incidents have no place in civil society. Society needs to come forward to spread social awareness so that such incidents do not take place in society. Participation of society is necessary to put a check on such incidents, he added.
