Free medical treatment to 2.8 lakh children

The Haryana Government has provided free medical treatment to over 2.8 lakh children at Government Health Facilities under Indira Bal Swashthya Yojna (IBSY).
          While stating this today, an official spokesman said that School Health Program, IBSY was launched on  January 26, 2010. The state government had had been covering children of anganwadis apart from government schools under it as target population. The basic objective behind the program was to improve the health of the children, a prerequisite for their all round development. IBSY was related to the overall health needs of the children up to 18 years of age studying in government schools and Anganwadis in which health check up of the children was conducted regarding the issues of the deficiencies, diseases and disability. In the Financial Year 2012-13, various activities had been undertaken under IBSY for ensuring good health of the children. 
         He said that under the program, on the spot treatment was given to the children in schools by doctors for minor ailments.  Financial aid amounting to Rs 92.50 lakh were given for tertiary level treatment of conditions like heart diseases, malignancy, disability related corrective surgeries etc at government approved tertiary level centers (AIIMS, Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, PGIMS Rohtak, GMCH 32, Chandigarh) to 77 children identified with ailments in the government schools and Anganwadis of Haryana. As many as 29 children had been treated and rest had been under treatment at these tertiary level centers. As many as 166 Corrective surgeries had been conducted for children with various types of disability, he added.
            He said that as many as 110 Disability Camps had been held in various districts of Haryana for all the government schools children with special needs in convergence with Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan in which 16609 children were examined and 7846 disability certificates were issued. Aids and appliances were being issued by SSA and RMSA to children identified in these camps. He said that IBSY had convergence with the components of other Adolescent Health Programmes like Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH), Weekly Iron and Folic Acid supplementation (WIFS) and Menstrual Health for optimal utilization of resources, he added.

          He said that Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics  and mitrata clinics were being run every day at all the 21 District hospitals during hospital timings and from 11.00a.m to 1.00 p.m on Saturdays at community health centers. He said that counseling services was provided by counselors of ‘Mitrata clinics’ at schools. To mobilize youth and for community participation   ‘youth festivals’ were organized at block level which includes health check up, counseling services, cultural programmes and various other competitions. He said that to generate awareness at village level, peer educators were trained on adolescent health issues who further guide adolescent’s boys and girls of villages. To tackle the problem of anemia among government and government aided college going girls, Hb testing of college going adolescent girls was done followed by providing Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) tablets for three months and Albendazole was given to control and prevent anemia in these girls.
          He said that Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) is a program of Ministry of Health and  Family Welfare, Union Government, which was meant for the eradication of anemia particularly for adolescent children. The slogan “Solid Bano India” was given by Union Government for this program. This program targets adolescents of 10-19 years of age who were studying in 6th -12th classes in government schools and for SABLA out of school girls. In Haryana, 16.5 lakh students of government schools and 30000 out of school girls of six SABLA districts were covered under this program. Mr. Yogeshwer Dutt, London Olympics Bronze Medal winner, had been declared as Brand Ambassador of Haryana Health Department.
