UGC Extends `Autonomous Status’ to Khalsa College till 2024

Historic Khalsa College Amritsar (KCA) today achieved a major milestone as the `autonomous status’ granted by University Grants Commission (UGC) was further extended by five years till 2024. The college was first amongst the colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) to be conferred the status in 2014 which allows academic, financial autonomy and more liberal grants to the institutions. 
College Principal Dr. Mehal Singh said the Standing Committee of the UGC cleared the title following a rigorous inspection carried by the team of experts in April this year. ``It was due to the impressive track record of the College in the last five years apart from the unified and earnest efforts of academic, non academic staff, students, parents and alumni that the status had been granted for five more years”, said an elated Dr. Singh.
 The 1892 established College witnessed commendable growth in various spheres including academic, sports and extra-curricular activities, said authorities adding that new skill-oriented courses were initiated. ``The infrastructural development, increase in students enrolment, land mark achievements in Sports, Cultural and Co-curricular activities; excellent results and placements, inculcation of research practices among students and teachers by introducing Ph.D., M. Phil., and Research Projects was witnessed during the last five years”, said Dr. Mehal Singh.
 He added that efficient and disciplined Examination Cell, introduction of Internal Assessment and promotion of healthy practices such as community services, extension services projects for the benefit of society was also reviewed by the UGC before taking the significant step. ``The college is providing 67 scholarships to the meritorious and needy students. To hone the skills among the youth, skill development centre has been established”, said officials.
 Dr. Mehal Singh thanked the management and visionary leadership of President Satyajit Singh Majithia, Vice President Swinder Singh Kathunangal and honourary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina for the continuous support for improving the quality of education at the College. ``The management has placed the college on a new pedestal. The college has seen tremendous progress under the leadership of present management”, said he.
He congratulated the entire staff for this achievement and expressed his gratitude to the Khalsa College Governing Council Members for steering the College to become one of the premier colleges of North India.
