As many as 80,000 new voters have applied for being registered in the electoral rolls at the Special Registration Camps organized by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Haryana on March 9.
Giving this information here today, Mr Shrikant Walgad, Chief Electoral Officer, Haryana, said that the campaign was organized by the ECI for getting new as well as the left-out voters registered.
It was run successfully at all the 16,129 polling booths under the supervision of the Booth Level Officers (BLOs). "One could see great enthusiasm among the youth and most of the people who had come for getting themselves registered appeared to be first-time voters", he added. Such eligible voters as had not been able to get themselves registered due to any reasons, could now do so up to March 12.
Mr Walgad said that the ECI had issued directions to the state government to either remove or hide the content related to political representatives on all official websites, including their pictures, messages, achievements and other content, during the period
when the Model Code of Conduct is effective. The ECI has written to the Haryana Chief Secretary to ensure that the such contents be either removed or hidden from all websites of the government at the earliest, he added.
The Model Code of Conduct has been effective since the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections on March 5. So long as the Code is in force, the use of red beacons by political representatives will remain prohibited. Besides, political representatives or officers
can use government vehicle only for official purposes like from home to government office and office to home, Mr Waglad said.
Members of Parliament, Ministers, MLAs and other political representatives who have been holding any portfolio in the state government cannot use government vehicle for campaigning. They can use private vehicles for campaigning purposes, but the use of red beacon on their private vehicles is prohibited, Mr Walgad added.
