CHANDIGARH, JUNE 5
With a view to take preventive measures to put a check on diarrhoea, Haryana Health Department would launch a State-wide Special Campaign for Diarrhoea Control in the next three months.
While giving this information today, Haryana Health Minister, Rao Narender Singh said that this campaign would be launched with the slogan “Jodi-Number One” with an aim to make people aware the importance of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets and Zinc tablets and how to control and manage diarrhea. Under this campaign, ASHA workers would reach out to rural households with children under the age group of 5 years for the distribution of ORS and Zinc tablets free of cost. Similarly, in urban areas, it would be distributed through the Urban Health Centres or Dispensaries, he added.
He said that during the campaign, the department would generate awareness through Information, Education, Communication (IEC) and Behavior Change Communication (BCC) activities and mass media regarding sanitation and hand washing practices, continuation of breast feeding during diarrhea and importance of increased liquid intake to prevent dehydration.
The Health Minister said that State Government is committed to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the State. He said that diarrhoea alone contributes about 12 per cent of mortality in children below 5 years of age every year. The number of deaths due to diarrhoea usually increases in summers and monsoons. Dehydration takes toll on children who are either malnourished or have poor access to healthcare facilities. Diarrhoea is preventable and its early treatment can avert majority of deaths, he added.
He said that the department has ensured that each and every government hospital and health institute should have proper arrangements for diarrhea patient, packets of ORS and Zinc tablets.
